LEBANON, Ohio — The Christian leaders Institute for Corrections, or CEI, has been named by the Corrections Business Network as one of the most important employers in the U.S. prison industry.
The organization’s CEO, Wayne Johnson, is a former CEO of Corrections Corporation of America, which is a major provider of corrections services to the private sector.
The nonprofit, which says it works with the state and local governments on corrections and incarceration, has also become a major advocate for prisoners and their families.
The group has a network of more than 700 partners across the country.
In a press release, Johnson said CEI’s role as a correctional leader is the most significant economic driver of our communities.
“With its commitment to human rights and human dignity, CEI is the nation’s leading leader for the advancement of the corrections profession,” Johnson said.
“We are committed to building a world-class corrections system that will work for everyone.”
The prison industry is a critical part of the U,S.
economy, and CEI was recognized for its “commitment to human and economic development,” according to the Prison Industries Alliance, a trade group for the correctional industry.
In its report, the prison lobby group noted that CEI has been able to attract and retain top executives because of the company’s support for prison labor.
“The CEI leadership team understands that it is critical for prison leaders to be leaders, both inside and outside their organization, and that is why they have chosen to work closely with CEI,” said Matthew Gifford, president of the Prison Industry Alliance.
“It’s clear that the CEI commitment to work with prison leaders on corrections policy, human rights, and economic issues is critical to its long-term success.”
“CEI’s leaders are passionate about building and strengthening a strong corrections system,” said Daniel Houser, president and CEO of the CEITA, a prison labor and labor issues advocacy group.
“Their commitment to ensuring the highest standards of human and labor safety and the highest quality of human services are critical for CEI to meet those standards.”
In an email, CEITAs president and chief executive officer Mark Kamin said CEITI was proud of the fact that the group’s leaders “have built an organization that will support the needs of the American prison community, while also supporting the prison workers and their communities.”
The CEIT members also noted that the organization has been recognized as one the top 100 employers of corrections employees in the United States.
Johnson, who previously worked for Corrections Corporation America, was the first executive director of CEI.
He left CEI in 2011, when the company was under bankruptcy protection.
CEI became a member of the Correctional Leadership Institute (CLI), a private sector organization that has more than 3,000 members.
CEI also is one of only two prison leadership organizations in the country that has not been awarded a prison contract by the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP), according to an article in the Prison Business Network.
The prison lobby was also named as one-half of the Corrections Leadership Institute for Correctional Service Reform, which focuses on “reform of the nation, state, and local correctional systems.”
CLI has about 100 members, including the CEIC and CEIT, according to its website.
For the most recent CEI data, which covers July 2018 through July 2019, the CEICS was ranked by a public data analysis firm, Correctional Leadership Research, as the second largest private corrections employer in the nation.
