“He said it is important that people don’t panic and try to change their lifestyle.”
For those who are experiencing a problem, they need to be encouraged to talk about their problems with their GP and to see a hearing specialist if they are still experiencing symptoms,” he said.
Dr Levy said the condition can cause symptoms similar to a seizure or anaphylactic shock.”
They can be quite severe,” he explained.”
You have to be aware of what is happening to your hearing and to be able to get help if you can’t hear.
“If someone is having a seizure, they will usually have difficulty speaking, but they may also feel dizzy or have trouble swallowing.”
“They may also experience some of the other symptoms that can accompany a seizure,” he added.
The condition can also cause hearing loss in children, but not adults.
People with hearing damage are at greater risk of other health problems, including:Heart diseaseA strokeA blood clotA tumourInfectionsThe condition has been linked to:A loss of hearing in the brainThe condition is often diagnosed by doctors who take a patient to a hearing clinic and test their hearing to see if it is normal.
If the test is negative, the patient will be put on a course of medication.
“People can go on a short course of medicines for the next five years, but the longer course is what causes the hearing problems,” Dr Levy said.
“The longer course means that the person is more likely to have other health issues, such as diabetes and heart disease.”
He added that there is a need for people to be more aware of the condition, to be educated and to seek professional help.
“We have to educate people and be more proactive about our hearing and we have to get to a point where we have good hearing to understand what’s going on,” he noted.
“I think the best thing that we can do is to make sure that people are aware of hearing problems and that they get help when they are diagnosed.”
Hopefully that will help us get better and we can get back to living our lives.
“Dr Levy added that hearing aids and hearing aids that come with a prescription can help improve hearing.
